Woman in Buffalo, New York accidentally sets herself on fire

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Buffalo, New York —A woman in Buffalo, New York in the United States is in critical condition tonight at Sisters Of Charity Hospital after she accidentally set herself on fire.

The unnamed elderly woman was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette, and the oxygen coming from her mask facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

Despite her “severe” burns as described by firefighters on radio communications, she was still able to dial the emergency line in the U.S., 911.

In the U.S. only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials in 2002. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

British soldier killed in Afghanistan

Wednesday, July 5, 2006

The Ministry of Defence has named a British soldier from the 3 Para Battle Group who died while on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.

The soldier, 19 year-old Private Damien Raymond Jackson, of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, came under fire from Taliban forces in the town of Sangin. He died while being given treatment.

His father, Daniel Jackson said: “I wish everyone to know just how extremely proud I am of my son Damien – of all that he has achieved in his lifetime and of the fact that he died, when duty called, protecting others, in the service of his country.

“A fine, upstanding South Shields lad, Damien was immensely proud to have achieved his ultimate ambition in becoming a member of the finest regiment in the British Army.”

He also condemned the government’s policy in Afghanistan, saying that UK forces are in “dreadful danger”. “We fully support the British Army in Afghanistan whilst in no way supporting or condoning a government policy, which has placed our young men and women in such dreadful danger.”

Private Jackson’s death means six British soldiers have died in the unstable Helmand region in the last four weeks. Since 2001 when operations began in Afghanistan, thirteen British soldiers have lost their lives.

On Saturday, two British soldiers were killed after a rocket-propelled grenade struck the headquarters they were in.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said he would give more resources to British troops to assist them in their fight against the Taliban, but he said the British Army has not yet made such a request.

“If they need more, we will make sure that they get more,” he told the House of Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.

Along with the Conservative Party leader David Cameron, Mr Blair also commended the efforts of British soldiers by praising their “extraordinary and heroic job”.

“They are fighting a battle that I think is important not just for the security of Afghanistan. It is important for the security of the wider world,” the Prime Minister said.

Approximately 4,000 British soldiers are stationed in Afghanistan, and almost 3,000 of them work in Helmand Province.

In general, they are in Afghanistan to help train the country’s troops, provide security, and assist with reconstruction. As 20% of the world’s opium is produced in Helmand Province, the main task for troops there is to control drugs lords.

Rower Tuijn halfway across Pacific in record attempt

Monday, July 9, 2007

Dutch adventurer Ralph Tuijn has reached the halfway point of his attempt to be the first person to row across the Pacific Ocean unaided.

The 16,000 kilometre journey from the coast of Peru to the seaside city of Brisbane, Australia, the widest section of the Pacific, has never been crossed absolutely unaided by a rower, and Tuijn says just nine people have rowed it even with assistance.

Tuijn reached the central point of his crossing, an insignificant point of water in the ocean, 111 days after setting off from Peru in March. He has been making good progress, and has since cut his estimated time of arrival in Brisbane by a month.

The Dutchman, who now expects to reach his destination on October 20, has kept in touch with those tracking his movements through daily internet postings from his laptop computer, including his wife Winnie. His boat, the Zeeman Challenger, is a seven-metre custom plywood vessel.

Tuijn has overcome a variety of obstacles to reach the halfway point. He is suffering from the constant attention of sharks, who often bump his boat and disrupt his attempts at sleep. One particular shark, dubbed ‘Gomulka’ by Tuijn, has been trailing the adventurer’s boat for extended periods.

He has also accidentally burnt himself when he spilled hot water on his foot whilst trying to make coffee, apparently also from a shark ‘bump’. He is also forced to manually pump water for cooking and drinking after his automatic water pump broke down not long into his journey.

“Physically everything feels great and I can’t help feeling that I could do this for 500 days, but mentally it’s still hard to be on your own for such a long time”

His vessel has no motors or sails, but relies on his physical rowing power to move. The boat does have a solar power system to provide energy for his laptop, a telephone and a global positioning system.

Tujin, who is raising money for a children’s home in Mumbai, India, is rowing at an average speed of 58 kilometres each day. His diet consists of freeze-dried foods and fish, which are keeping him physically well-conditioned despite tiring mentally.

Tuijn is a serial adventurer and experienced rower. He has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, as well as cycled across Russia and the icy terrain of Greenland.

Ap Can Pick Up Off

jojoRecently, four national ministries (including the Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Finance, State Administration of Taxation and the Ministry of Industry) conference held in Beijing, on the off-season fertilizer industry, the export tariff drafting program, has been basically formed the policy adjustments include: urea, phosphoric acid an ammonium, diammonium phosphate exports of off-season tariff extended by one month, that is, the export season is from June to August ammonium phosphate, urea export season is from July to September, low season 10% export duty. <

Since June, the country started off-season AP export tariffs to 10% of the standard charge, with the previous rate of 110% from February to May compared to a huge drop, which is no doubt the domestic downturn P The market is good news. Since the end of last year by Economic crisis Impact, whether international or domestic fertilizer market suffered an unprecedented hit, the price decline, overstock, exports and other problems facing the phosphate fertilizer plant is limited in front of home, in a sigh, along with the reduction in tariffs, the domestic fertilizer market downturn pattern can As the temperature picked up in June?

Present, the domestic MAP Price mainstream in 1600 yuan / ton, 64% of the DAP’s main offer is only 2,400 yuan -2 500 yuan / ton plus the recent Crude And shipping costs are the rebound, according to current prices, our 64% DAP FOB 300 U.S. dollars / tons, according to this price, even if the export tariff of zero, 64% of the price of DAP In 1900 yuan / ton, the price has been below cost of production. China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association Wuxi Yan said, Should the export of AP means losing money.

Recent transactions in India and China had 100,000 tons diammonium, price CFR325-330 dollars, equivalent to 300-305 U.S. dollars FOB China, thus we can see that the international fertilizer market downturn with the Department, the first performance reduction in demand, prices decline; followed by the traditional importing countries to take advantage of international market competition, Chinese enterprises rush to export artificially suppress the price of off-season, so that China’s phosphate fertilizer business faces little of interest or even loss-making situation; international market competition is not the same conducive to the smooth export of phosphate fertilizer, diammonium U.S. exports of 452,000 tons in April, up 70%, the first 4 months, the U.S. exported 1.294 million tons diammonium, up 13%, of which 731,000 tons are exported to India, and China on April 1 ammonium and diammonium exported 69,000 tons, far lower than the same period.

Despite a decline in tariffs, low pattern of phosphate fertilizer market is still unlikely to improve. But the reporter, some business executives, said: Despite the meager profits, the manufacturers chose a small amount of exports to ease pressure on stocks. Overall, 6,7 the low season months of domestic phosphate fertilizer exports will accelerate the digestion of inventory to a certain level to alleviate the grim trend of the domestic oversupply.

A company official pointed out that the domestic phosphate fertilizer plant at home should not be all to the “outside” view, off-season adjustments to the export tariffs for the domestic market can not effectively turn, hinges on adjusting the industrial distribution, product structure and eliminate backward production capacity, production companies and distribution companies should rely on the Fed Sell And other strategies to solve the current market crisis.

Resources and fertilizer are Energy Conversion products, bear the brunt of agriculture to meet domestic demand, evident in the production situation of supply exceeding demand, allow enterprises to participate in international competition as appropriate, full use of international and domestic markets on the sustainable development of China’s fertilizer industry is also necessary to have expert advice : the basis of ensuring the domestic demand for China’s national conditions to develop a stable and relatively long-term export tax policy, both domestic excess capacity and can digest to ensure the relative stability of domestic fertilizer prices.

The same time, the Chinese fertilizer industry Association Wuxi Yan suggested that the state fertilizer industry, the relevant departments to formulate a long-term development plan to accelerate internal integration of fertilizer industry, to avoid the blindness of the domestic fertilizer production capacity expansion, to encourage cost- advantage, resources and technical advantages of large scale production of chemical fertilizer enterprises bigger and stronger.

Oil in Alberta spill may be carcinogenic

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

The province of Alberta, Canada is considering legal action against Canadian National Railway for failing to warn that a derailment last week contaminated Wabamun Lake with a hazardous chemical.

The 700,000 litres of heavy Bunker C fuel oil that spilled into the lake asphyxiated birds and killed fish.

In addition, one of the ruptured tanker cars sent 70,000 liters of Imperial Pole Treating Oil into the lake. This oil is a yellow mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Naphthalene, a component of this “very toxic material” is suspected of causing skin cancer if touched and lung or other cancers if inhaled.[1] Inhalation is promoted by actions that cause splashing or foaming. The mineral oil is used in connection with pentachlorophenol for preserving wooden utility poles.

Wabamun Lake is a popular summertime recreational area about 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Edmonton, Alberta.

The 766-megawatt Keephills power generating plant, one of 3 in Wabamun, was shut down because the coal-fired plant uses water from the lake. Edmonton’s health authority ordered people not to swim, boat or rescue animals in the lake and to stop using its water or any water from nearby wells for cooking, drinking, showering or brushing teeth. These warnings came 3 days after many residents, including children, had been wading into the oil slick without protective clothing to save wildlife injured by the spill and others had been routinely depending on the lakewater for home use. Why the alert was not issued sooner remains under investigation and may result in criminal charges. Canadian National Railway had been informed of the nature of the oil when it was loaded by Imperial Oil Ltd., Canada’s largest petroleum company. Imperial Oil is posting informational updates on a special website [2]. In addition The Wabamun Residents Committee has established an information website [3].

Wikinews interviews author and filmmaker Peter John Ross

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with American author and filmmaker Peter John Ross. The head of Sonnyboo Productions, an independent film studio based in Columbus, Ohio, he has made numerous short films as well as co-directed a feature, the World War II B-movie Horrors of War.

He has also written a book on filmmaking, Tales from the Front Line of Indie Filmmaking. He says that it “combines helpful articles for beginning filmmakers with narrative tales based on my experiences raising money for features and the crazy personalities that invade the world of microbudget filmmaking.”

When asked why he makes movies, Ross replied, “There is no greater thrill than sitting in a room full of strangers watching the stories unfold with flickering pictures and sound. I live for the moments when I can sit there and watch the movies with people I don’t know and really feel how they react to what I wrote or directed or edited.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron makes unannounced visit to Libya

Friday, February 1, 2013

British Prime Minister David Cameron made an unannounced visit to the Libyan capital city of Tripoli yesterday after visiting Algeria earlier in the day.

David Cameron pledged that Britain would help in training Libya’s security forces. He said in a joint press conference held with Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan that “the British people want to stand with you and help you deliver the greater security that Libya needs”. Cameron also reiterated his support for the French-backed intervention in Mali, denying suggestions put to him that foreign intervention in Islamic countries would lead to a backlash against Western nations by al-Qaeda.

The security was tight during his walkabout in the Martyrs’ Square, where police attempted to hold back the locals as a police helicopter flew overhead. His visit to Tripoli comes in the aftermath of recent threats to the British embassy and just a week after British citizens were urged to leave the second largest city of Benghazi due to a “specific and imminent” threat to Westerners.

Police officers investigating the 1988 Lockerbie bombing from the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary have been granted access to new information to help them with their inquiries. In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in 2009 on compassionate health grounds and died last year.

Blogging Advice

More On This Topic:

Submitted by: Rachel D Jackson

If you’re like so many other people who’ve gotten the ‘blogging bug’, congratulations, you’re in for a lot of fun! People start their own blogs for many reasons, sometimes they just want to be able to share their life with family and friends far away, sometimes they like sharing their knowledge about one of their hobbies, and sometimes they want to make money. Whatever your reason for starting a blog, you’re going to want to start off on the right foot and get some great blogging advice, and that’s where this article can help.

Blogging isn’t a difficult thing to learn, as a matter of fact, most people can easily learn all they need to know in an hour or so. Here are some key points to keep in mind as you begin your online blogging adventure:

1. You can start your own blog for free. There are many blogging platforms that will host your blog for you for no charge, WordPress.com and Blogger.com are two of the most popular. Even with the free versions, you’ll still have access to hundreds of different designs, or themes, that you can use for your blog. You can also use plugins and widgets, basically just like apps for a smart phone, that will allow you to do many different things with your blog, these are usually also free.

2. The topic of your blog should be based on two major considerations: what do you love and whether or not you want to use your blog to start an online business. Sometimes these two things will overlap, your business blog can be about something that you love. Other times you won’t be able to make money with your hobby because there just aren’t enough other people who love that topic enough to pay for products related to it.

3. When you start your blog, especially a business blog, you will want people to return frequently and read your new posts. In order to keep them coming back you’ll want to make sure that you make your posts and the other information on your blog related to the topic of your blog. For example, if your blog is about gardening you really don’t want to start going off on tangents about all kinds of other topics. Occasionally it’s ok to stray a little bit but the bottom line is that the readers of your blog joined because they were interested in that topic, so give them what they want.

4. If you want to use your blog to make money and start a business you should consider buying your own domain name and get your own hosting account. Don’t worry if this sounds foreign to you, it’s easy and inexpensive enough. The reason this is important is that if you stick with the free versions you don’t actually own anything, not the name of your blog or that little piece of internet ‘real estate’ your blog sits on. That’s not a good way to structure your business. Buy your domain name and get your blog hosted and you will own it and you can decide what you want to do with it.

I hope this blogging advice has helped you a little bit. The most important thing to remember is that you should have fun with your blog. This is a great way to express yourself so make the most out of it.

20 tons of cocaine seized by US Coast Guard

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has seized 20 tons or nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over US$500 million in what authorities call one of the largest cocaine busts in history.

Three busts in total were made in a period of nearly one month. The first on February 19, off the coast of Mexico, March 18 off the coast of Panama and on March 25, also off the coast of Panama.

In the first bust on February 19, “the Ecuadorian-flagged fishing vessel Don Juan K was approached in the Pacific Ocean February 19 off the coast of Mexico while allegedly offloading cocaine into “go-fast” (cigarette-style boat) boats. The fishing vessel’s crew apparently set fire to Don Juan K in an attempt to destroy the evidence and flee in the go-fasts. The USCGC Sherman stopped the go-fasts and recovered about 900 pounds of cocaine as Don Juan K sank. The 14 crew members are being processed for further legal action,” said a statement on the USCG’s website.

The second bust on March 18 yielded nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine.

“The 330-foot Panamanian-flagged motor vessel Gatun was interdicted in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 18 off the coast of Panama while heading north toward the United States. Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded the vessel and found 765 bales of cocaine weighing approximately 38,000 pounds in two shipping containers. Gatun was escorted back to Panama and its 14 crew members processed for further legal action,” added the statement.

In the third bust on March 25, at least 2,000 pounds of cocaine was seized, also from a ship off Panama’s coast.

“[The] Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded a small stateless go-fast in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 25 off the coast of Panama following a short chase, in which, the go-fast attempted to flee at a high rate of speed. Approximately 2,000 pounds of cocaine was found aboard the go-fast and its four crew members were processed for further legal action,” said the statement.

Several agencies both in the U.S. and in other countries in Central and South America and will continue to investigate the extent of the drug ring.

“The Coast Guard works in close coordination with Joint Interagency Task Force South, U.S. Attorney’s office, Panama Express South, DEA, FBI, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection, as well as the Departments of Justice, State and Homeland Security on counter drug operations in the Pacific Ocean near Central and South America. These drug smuggling routes are some of the most active, yielding roughly 70 percent of the cocaine seized annually by the Coast Guard,” added the statement.
